ALMEN - “Tsjakka!” Ze gaan d’r voor. Voor de snorrende camera van SBS6 stappen deze zestien jongeren met aan autisme en adhd verwante problematiek op de fiets.

Met Emile Ratelband in de voorste gelederen maken ze een rondje. Nogmaals klinkt het met de vuist omhoog: “Tsjakka!” Hadden ze al een negatief zelfbeeld, daar is nu niets meer van te merken.

Deze week maken deze jongeren een fietstocht van Groningen naar Maastricht (425 kilometer). Doel hun zelfbeeld op te vijzelen maar tegelijk ook om een goede daad te verrichten. Onderweg collecteren zij voor War Child. Gisteren waren ze te gast op kampeerboerderij De Baankreis in Almen. Zojuist hebben ze ademloos geluisterd naar een peptalk van Emile Ratelband.

De ervaringsdeskundige legt de sportievelingen uit dat hijzelf adhd, het syndroom van Asperger en nog veel meer tegelijk heeft. De lagere school amper afmaakte, dik was, gepest werd, maar wel altijd in zichzelf geloofde.

Op de vraag aan ieder persoonlijk, waar hij of zij goed in is, wordt eerst schoorvoetend geantwoord. Maar als het uur voorbij is verdringen ze zich om Ratelband.

Ondertussen maakt deze goeroe de jongeren duidelijk dat je van geld verdienen niet rijk wordt, maar wel van het geven van jezelf aan een ander. En ook leert hij hen dat veranderingen in je leven aanbrengen, weerstand bij anderen oproept. Om dat te ervaren laat hij hen een ballon opblazen. Om vervolgens te verklaren dat adhd vele voordelen biedt.

Deze mensen hebben hun unieke kwaliteiten leren ontdekken of van hun probleem een groot voordeel gemaakt. Laat je dus niet misleiden wanneer psychiaters je vertellen dat je een ziekte hebt en dat dat alleen maar nadelen heeft…

“Zeggen dat adhd voordelen heeft, vind ik toch een brug te ver.” reageert de Antwerpse kinderpsychiater Hans Hellemans. ”Russel Barkley, de Amerikaanse adhd-autoriteit, heeft dat onderzocht. Zijn conclusie was ook dat er nauwelijks voordelen zijn.”

Er is geen enkel bewijs dat de ziekte ADHD bestaat dus laat je niet in een hoekje drukken door een omstreden arts die uit is op het verspreiden van zijn lucratieve ziekte-religie. Het feit is dat je kwaliteiten hebt die geen enkel ‘normaal’ mens heeft. (Creatief) talent is bijvoorbeeld het meest schaarse goed op aarde. Het is kostbaarder dan goud of geld voor een bedrijf, maar talent werkt psychisch vaak anders. Mensen die het etiket ADHD krijgen kunnen vaak moeilijker concentreren op schooltaken (zie Albert Einstein bijvoorbeeld, die volgens de normen ADHD zou hebben), maar ze hebben vaak op creatieve gebieden extra capaciteiten, en dat is nu juist wat voor een bedrijf het meest waardevol is. Je hoeft het alleen maar te ontdekken.
